Days Gone Remastered Review – Deacon Rides Again on PS5

Sometimes a game just needs a little time to truly shine, and that couldn’t be more true for Days Gone. Back in 2019, it struggled with technical issues, mixed reviews, and a slow start, but over the years, numerous updates turned it into a solid open-world experience. Now, with the PS5 remaster, Deacon St. John’s post-apocalyptic adventure gets a proper stage, complete with new features and a technical overhaul.

Deacon Returns

For those who skipped the original or gave up after a few frustrating hours, the remaster offers the perfect chance to revisit the game. This edition builds on the improved PS4 version, including all patches and added content—New Game+, extra difficulty levels, and a Challenge Mode featuring timed and combat trials. The new Horde Assault mode focuses entirely on the game’s core: massive Freaker hordes.

Technically, the PS5 offers several modes: Performance (1440p at 60fps), Quality (native 4K at 30fps), and on PS5 Pro (the version tested) an Enhanced Mode with 1584p rendering and PSSR output at 4K targeting 60fps. The improvements over the PS4 Pro upgrade are noticeable, though not revolutionary.

Graphics and Gameplay

Visually, the remaster shines: crisp character models, dense vegetation, and atmospheric lighting make the Oregonian wilderness feel alive and immersive. Previous issues like blurry textures and pop-ins are largely resolved. Gameplay remains unchanged: ride your bike, explore abandoned towns, scavenge supplies, fight Freakers, and follow Deacon’s emotional journey. The early chapters still drag slightly, and Deacon’s monologues can feel overly edgy, but once the story picks up, the game’s strengths emerge: dynamic missions, believable character growth, and a balanced mix of combat, stealth, and exploration.

New Features and DualSense Support

DualSense support is a highlight. Haptic feedback conveys bike rumble, traction on muddy terrain, and melee impact, while adaptive triggers add subtle weight to shooting. Horde Assault is a welcome addition for those who enjoyed the game’s massive Freaker hordes. Players must survive increasingly tough waves, scavenge for weapons, craft gear, and unlock bonuses for subsequent runs. Four maps with unique leaderboards make this a challenging and rewarding expansion for veterans.

While not a full remake or entirely new version, Bend Studio delivers a polished, visually appealing, and technically stable package with meaningful extras. Fans—or newcomers—can now experience the ultimate console edition of Days Gone. It may be unlikely we see a sequel, but this remaster gives the game the respect and spotlight it deserves.

Verdict

Days Gone Remastered is a solid upgrade that enhances both visuals and gameplay on the PS5. With added modes, DualSense support, and technical improvements, it’s the definitive way to experience Deacon’s journey through a post-apocalyptic Oregon.
